A History of Expertise and Innovation
RJ Lee Group has assessed environmental issues since the early 1980s when our Energy Technology Consultants (ETC) pioneered the recognition of specific air quality patterns. We developed a cutting-edge technique for identifying, measuring, and characterizing particles in the air using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM).
RJ Lee Group has worked with clients in various industries, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to assess and provide solutions for environmental factors that could affect our health. Our services have grown over the years, from setting controls for unbound nanoparticles (UNP) to designing and building test chambers to simulate specific environmental conditions.
Today we offer our expertise for our clients’ environmental and compliance concerns and perform rigorous assessment and management of potential environmental risks.
Capabilities
Materials Characterization
RJ Lee Group's state-of-the art materials characterization laboratory is equipped with an extensive breadth of instrumentation and experience capable of evaluating the macro-, meso-, and microscale properties of a wide range of metals, polymers, and composites. We provide organizations with practical recommendations for critical materials decisions.
As materials and devices evolve in complexity, so must our analytical methods. RJ Lee Group boasts one of the world's largest collections of electron beam instruments, enabling us to visualize materials at both low magnification for surface surveys and ultra-high magnification for nanoscale scrutiny.
Materials Performance & Selection
Choosing the right material is a decision that impacts product reliability, service life, and total cost of ownership. RJ Lee Group helps clients make those decisions with confidence by evaluating candidate materials against the specific mechanical, thermal, chemical, and environmental demands of their intended application.
Our scientists conduct accelerated life testing and environmental exposure simulations to project long-term performance and identify potential failure modes before they become field problems. Whether you're selecting alloys for corrosive service, polymers for high-temperature environments, or coatings for wear resistance, we provide the data-driven analysis needed to move forward with certainty.

Materials Characterization
We specialize in the investigation of material composition and structure. Our team of experts meticulously analyze various materials to evaluate their elemental properties and internal structure. With cutting-edge technology and advanced techniques, we are able to uncover the hidden characteristics and unique properties of different materials.
By delving deep into the composition and structure of materials, we unlock a wealth of information that can have significant implications in various fields, including product research and development, forensic investigation, and industrial hygiene & safety.
With our commitment to excellence and unparalleled expertise, we are your go-to source for all your material investigation needs.
Instrumentation
Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)
Understanding a material's identity and structure often starts with how it interacts with light. Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) allows RJ Lee Group's scientists to examine materials at the micro level by revealing optical behaviors—such as birefringence and extinction angles—that are invisible under standard illumination.
PLM is a foundational tool in our materials characterization work. It is especially effective for identifying crystalline substances, synthetic fibers, and mineral particles within complex sample matrices. By analyzing how a material transmits and refracts polarized light, our analysts can distinguish between phases, confirm composition, and detect contamination or foreign particulate matter. This makes PLM a critical first step in investigations spanning pharmaceutical quality assurance, industrial contamination studies, and regulatory compliance—delivering precise material identification that informs subsequent analytical decisions.
