Asbestos Testing & Consultation
With over 30 years of experience in asbestos testing and mineralogy across various industries, RJ Lee Group is the trusted partner for addressing asbestos concerns.
Asbestos exposure remains a significant public health issue. Regulations are in effect to safeguard individuals from harmful exposure, making accurate testing vital for ensuring compliance and eliminating any risk.
Whether you're dealing with construction sites, consumer products, or raw materials, selecting a reliable asbestos testing laboratory can be crucial for achieving success and ensuring peace of mind.
Why Asbestos Testing Is Important?
Potential exposure to airborne asbestos fibers can lead to multiple respiratory diseases and rare forms of cancer. Federal and state regulations limit the use of asbestos in various materials. Testing materials prior to their removal during renovations or incorporation into consumer products ensures compliance with environmental and occupational safety standards.
Rigorous testing protects building occupants, workers, and the public while also helping to prevent liability issues. In legal and regulatory contexts, accurate, defensible results are essential for maintaining compliance and upholding safety protocols.
Comprehensive Testing Methods
Our laboratory utilizes advanced testing methods to provide precise identification and quantification of asbestos. RJ Lee Groups’ laboratory commonly performs methodologies in accordance with ISO, ASTM, OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and state standards, including California CARB 435 and Nevada DOT.
Our approach to asbestos testing uses multiple methods and various types of instrumentation to get accurate results and gather as much information as possible for informed decision-making.
Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM)
PCM is widely used for counting airborne fibers because it provides a fast and cost-effective method to assess worker exposure in occupational settings. However, PCM is limited in that it cannot distinguish asbestos fibers from non-asbestos fibers (i.e., fiberglass, etc.). Nevertheless, it is effective for monitoring total fiber concentrations in air samples, which is crucial for compliance with OSHA and NIOSH regulations.
PCM’s long-standing use has contributed to decades of exposure data, forming the basis for many of today’s occupational exposure limits and safety protocols. It has been a cornerstone of occupational asbestos monitoring since the 1970s.
Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)
PLM is the industry gold standard for asbestos analysis, having been required for testing for over 20 years. It accurately identifies asbestos fibers by their unique optical properties, like birefringence and refractive index. PLM is cost-effective, and with skilled analysts, it's a fast and reliable test. It remains a trusted method for routine asbestos screening in industrial hygiene and environmental labs.
Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
This ultra-high magnification and resolution technique offers unparalleled accuracy, enabling the analysis of crystal structure and mineral composition at the nanoscale level. TEM is also capable of detecting microscopic asbestos fibers that are below the resolution limits of PLM and PCM. With its ability to distinguish asbestos from non-asbestos lookalikes in challenging matrices, TEM is essential for high-stakes environments like schools, hospitals, and industrial sites.
